Pre and Post Operative Instructions
HHair Transplants can be a great way to boost confidence, feel less self-conscious and create a happy disposition. Embracing hair transplantation means that you can bid adieu to wigs and toupees; not necessarily a bad thing. Plus you can go back to looking the way you did when you had a full head of hair, just like travelling back in time.
However, before you consider getting the procedure done, here are 10 facts to equip you with answers to the basic what’s and how’s of Hair Transplantation.
FUE vs. FUT
There are two main types of hair transplant procedures that clinics offer, namely, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). The FUT method is older and involves cutting and removing a strip of skin and hair from your scalp. From there, it is divided up and transplanted into the balding areas. The more recent FUE method makes small incisions around each hair follicle unit, which is then prepared and transplanted to the balding area.
Skin & Hair Type
In order to achieve the best results possible, minimize scarring and maximize success, you will need to consult a Hair Transplant Surgeon who knows how to care for your skin and hair type. This should ideally be done before and after the procedure.
Cost The cost of the procedure will be upwards of Rs. 50, 000 based on the credibility of the clinic and its location. Bear in mind, good and permanent results take money. Good thing is, with this procedure it’s more of an investment than a recurring cost.
Average Healing Time
The healing process takes approximately 3 days or lesser, inclusive of bandage removal, area cleansing and a hair wash.
Hair transplantation is not usually a painful procedure because local anaesthesia is administered on the treatment area during the surgical stage.
Hair transplantation causes minimal to zero scarring post procedure. So, yes, there are no souvenirs from the procedure besides hair.
This procedure is 95% permanent, visible 10 months after the procedure. Should there be any thinning or hair loss post the procedure, there are two approved hair loss medications that can effectively halt that, namely, Minoxidil and Finasteride. However, it is advisable to speak to your surgeon about using medications after your hair transplant.
Precautions Post Procedure
There is no real precaution necessary post the procedure except the possibility of wearing a turban-like bandage, which is applied overnight to hold all the grafts in place.
Length of Procedure
Length of Procedure A typical session of between 1,500 to 3,000 grafts normally involves a full day of surgery on an out patient basis. Most patients will arrive in the morning and will have their procedure completed by late afternoon.
Who Qualifies For The Procedure?
Anyone can get a hair transplant, the exceptions being children and people with pre-existing medical conditions. The marvels of modern technology have made it possible to do anything the mind conceives; curing baldness is truly a significant step in that direction.
SSo you finally bit the bullet and decided to get a hair transplant done. While you may be having visions of a thick crop of mane coming up soon, things are not that simple.
Here are the five most important things to know once your hair transplant surgery is done.
Take care of your scar
However skilled your doctor may be, a certain amount of scarring is inevitable once you have undergone a hair transplant. While waiting for new follicles to grow, take care to have certified medications that will reduce the swelling. This will also help in reducing scalp irritation since you will be told not to touch your scalp under any circumstances.
Keep your head elevated
This is necessary to avoid any extra swelling on your scalp. Since the skin will be bruised from the operation, you will need to sleep on two or more pillows to prop up your head. Ideally, there is nothing better than a reclining chair to sleep in if you can.
Avoid physical activity
Your doctor will doubtless tell you not to venture in the sun upon surgery. Take care to also avoid strenuous exercises that will make you sweat. Sweating increases the risk of infection to a great extent. You should also avoid visiting steams and saunas for the same reason.
Don’t eat spicy food and alcohol
As Indians, we are accustomed to spicy dishes, but the body’s reaction to such food will interfere with the healing process. Alcohol consumption is a strict no-no as well as it affects the blood supply to the head. If possible, try to avoid smoking for a month immediately after the surgery as well.
Keep the area around your scalp clean throughout the recovery phase. You will feel soreness and a numb sensation in the places where the incision has been made. Understand the medications and their frequency correctly and do not attempt to self-treat yourself in any way. Recovery after the operation takes time. And finally, keep yourself busy with other activities apart from obsessing about when new hair will grow. Use these tips to get the best results out of your hair transplant operation and show off the new you in no time.
